King Kertarajasa
14thc. Found in Simping, East Java
Size: g. 2 m
Museum Ref: 1038/Far end of covered walkway, facing courtyard
It is though that this intricately patterned exhibit is a likeness of King Kertarajasa with the attributes of the Hindu God, Shiva. An allegorical trident with three flames is attached to the forefinger of the statue's raised left hand, while on the right forefinger is a conch shell surrounded by a halo. With an unusual endeavour at realism, the sculptor has depicted a snail with long horns emerging from its shell and it could be interpreted that this symbolises a soul departing from its body. Candi Sumberjati, where the statue originally stood, was also the King's funerary temple.
