Dodot
Dodots are ceremonial fabrics previously
worn only by the king, nobility and court dancers of Central Java.
They are also used by bridal couples, who are considered 'king and
queen for a day'. Dodots are approximately six times the length
of an ordinary sarong and are worn around the lower body. Court
etiquette used to dictate how the dodot should be draped, and its
size varied as to whether it was to be worn by a man, woman or king.
The pattern of this hand-drawn dodot is know as bangun tulak alas-alasan.
Bangun Tulak means 'to ward off evil' whereas alas-alasan means
'forest'. Symbolising life and fertility. A network of tendrils
forms patterns in the shape of mountains, animals and mythical creatures,
highlighted with gold leaf.
