Vessel
Bronze Age
Found in Kerinci, West Sumatera
Material: bronze
Size: h. 50.8 cm; w. 37 cm
Museum Ref: 1443

This vessel has been made from two sheets of bronze. It is similar in shape to a fisherman's bamboo basket, which would have held the day's catch. The predominant designs resemble latter day batik motifs known as 'broken swords' (parang rusak) from Central Java. The function of this vessel is still not known for sure, but it is believed to have been used in religious ceremonies.
