The
interesting collection in this room reflects the history of Indonesia
between the 16th and 19th centuries. As well as European and Indonesian
canons, objects include European furniture, a bust of sir Thomas
Stamford Raffles, which was a gift from the Raffles Museum, Singapore,
and a locked treasure chest whose contents are still unknown today.
The room is decorated with large, wooden beams on the ceiling and
Javanese-style carved doors, which once belonged to the Red Shop
(Toko Merah), a store in Jalan Kali Besar, Kota, the area formerly
known as Old Batavia.
In 1972, the majority of the exhibits
in this collection were moved to the History Museum (Museum Sejarah
DKI) in the old Stadhius building but many of the items that were
returned to Indonesia by Dutch government in 1978 are still kept
in this room.
The room was once used as the directors'
meeting room, when the Museum was still called Museum van de Bataviaasch
Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (Museum for the Batavian
Society of Arts and Sciences) and it occasionally serves the same
purpose today.
