This group of statues
represents the Trinity of Hinduism - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva -
the highest gods in the Hindu pantheon. They stand on their characteristic
mounts: respectively, the goose, the garuda and the bull. In each
of the gods' four hands are objects which represent the attributes
specific to that deity. These Hindu gods have been revered in many
parts on Indonesia, especially Java, since the fifth century and
are believed to be the personification (artais) of one supreme being.
The cult of Shiva was particularly widespread and many temples (candi)
were dedicated to him.
