Standing
Buddha
7th c.
Found in Sikendeng, West Sulawesi in 1921
Size: h. 75 cm
Museum Ref: 6057
This large statue is a fine example
of the complex wax-casting technique, which was employed to produce
a hollow shape. It is the second-largest Buddhist bronze ever found
in Indonesia but it was actually discovered in an area where there
were no traces of Buddhist culture. It is believed to be the Buddha
Dhipankara, a Buddhist god who was worshiped by sailors. The statue
probably came ashore by accident, perhaps as a result a shipwreck.
